How to Singletask as Against Multitasking…
(which is highly detrimental to your health and productivity rate)
Avoid the Dings.
Distraction is everywhere, it is the very air we breathe. One minute you are working on something really important, the next you hear the familiar “ding”, it’s a message from your BFF!
It is hard to keep your brain focused once a distraction has occurred – so like I do, when you’re working of something important – avoid the dings. Avoid the pop ups. Turn sound notifications off and if possible, turn away from every screen – phone, TV, PC etc. and FOCUS!
Cluster Task to Clear the Clutter.
So this will be helpful for answering your DMs and emails. Don’t check your inbox and email every time you get a pop up! This will cause major distractions during the day.
What you should do is have specific times in the day when you check your emails and DMs – early in the mornings and maybe late at nights!
This technique will help you focus on other things during the hours of the day, instead of having to check your mails every now and then.
Make your business line open, however, in case a client needs to reach you urgently!
Thought Management & Sticky Notes will Help You.
I can be working and be totally winning on focusing on a project when an errant thought will suddenly come to mind. Some of them might be business related, others might just be random thoughts! So what you should do when this happens is to quickly write down that thought – if it is important – and go back to what you are working on. Usually, I go around with a jotter, but in cases that I do not have my jotter, I use my Sticky Notes (on PC) or Color Note (on phone).
Singletasking is managing these immaterial thoughts and going back to concentrate!
Take Short Times Off.
It is highly important that you take time off every now and then during the day. This gives your brain some time to relax and not deal with all the information that surrounds you. I try to rest after every 4 hours during the day, I really try; and when I do, I come back to the job refreshed and ready to go again!
Do these things and your productivity rate and health in general will be better for it. Remember, multitasking isn’t really multitasking. According to neuroscientists, it is Task Switching and that means rapidly moving back and forth between different tasks – which studies have shown reduces the grey matter, shrinks the brain and reduces productivity by 40%.
I’m sorry to have been the one to break it to you!
